Ammonites evolved so rapidly and were so incredibly abundant worldwide that they are now widely used as “index fossils.” This means that finding a specific species of ammonite allows paleontologists to pinpoint the exact age of the rock layer where it was discovered. They dominated the oceans for over 300 million years before going extinct 66 million years ago.
In this video, I rendered an ammonite model that shifts its morphology using a procedural tool I created. This system allows me to tweak its underlying geometric rules and instantly generate an infinite number of unique variations (including color patterns) , eliminating the need to model each one of them.
Taxonomically speaking, Identifying an ammonite fossil is quite simple thanks to its iconic flat, coiled calcareous shell. What sets them apart from similar fossils, however, is the sheer diversity of their ornamentation and structure. To simulate this morphological complexity, I set up around 11 different feature sliders in the tool. The on-screen demonstration shows six of them: the degree of coiling (evolute or involute), the lateral groove, chamber, the tubercles, rib branching, and the keel.
(This is not Ai, I used 3D softwares using procedural methods)
